Fa Li Brings AI Expertise to Jackson School Faculty | Jackson School of Geosciences

Fa Li has joined the Jackson School of Geosciences Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences as an assistant professor, focusing on the study of terrestrial ecosystems and hydroclimatic hazards.
He aims to use a combination of artificial intelligence, Earth system models, remote sensing, and field measurements to better monitor, predict, and reduce hydroclimatic risks.
Before joining the school, Li worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University and is part of a group that uses AI to research Earth processes.
Li’s work seeks to make AI more transparent by integrating scientific knowledge into machine learning models, aiming to improve reliability and interpretability.
One of his projects involves scaling ecosystem processes globally by correlating various environmental factors such as soil moisture and temperature with ecosystem function.
Peter Flemings, interim chair of the department, expressed enthusiasm for Li’s contributions to both Earth hazards and artificial intelligence research in geosciences.
