The Innovation in AI Teaching Award highlights UGA faculty members who integrate AI into teaching to significantly enhance learning outcomes.
Bree Bang-Jensen, an Assistant Professor at the School of Public and International Affairs, received this year’s award for her AI-integrated assignment in INTL 4210: International Law.
Bang-Jensen’s two-part assignment transformed treaty drafting instruction by utilizing generative AI tools in an innovative way.
Students first used AI to draft treaties on current transnational issues, then edited the AI-generated content, fostering AI literacy and prompting strategies.
The second part required students to write ratification memos from a nation-state’s perspective using scholarly evidence, prohibiting AI use to emphasize individual analytical skills.
The assignment enabled students to develop legal reasoning skills beyond drafting and understand the necessity of human oversight in AI-driven tasks.
Meg Mittelstadt from the Center for Teaching and Learning praised the assignment for its meaningful and disciplinary-appropriate AI integration supporting critical thinking and real-world engagement.
