South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has selected Rakuten Maritime’s vessel cybersecurity platform for deployment across its ship design, construction and operational processes, marking the first commercial rollout of the system.
Under the agreement, Hanwha Ocean will integrate Rakuten Maritime’s cybersecurity-by-design framework throughout the shipbuilding process, allowing cyber risks to be identified and addressed before vessels enter service.
The platform includes threat intelligence, threat modelling and risk management tools designed to assess cybersecurity vulnerabilities during vessel design and construction. Hanwha Ocean will also use portable scanning technology to evaluate onboard equipment and monitor cyber risks on selected vessels currently under construction.
The move comes as shipbuilders face growing pressure to incorporate cybersecurity into vessel design ahead of the introduction of the International Association of Classification Societies’ Unified Requirements E26 and E27, which set minimum standards for cyber resilience on newbuildings.
Ryan Son, president of Rakuten Symphony’s internet services business unit and head of Rakuten Maritime, said the agreement marked the company’s first commercial deployment.
“By integrating these tools from the outset of design and construction rather than treating security as an afterthought, Hanwha Ocean is establishing a new standard for proactive, lifecycle risk management across the maritime industry,” he said.
Hanwha Ocean said cybersecurity had become an increasingly important consideration as ships become more digital and connected.
“As vessel digitalisation accelerates across the global shipping sector, cybersecurity has become a critical factor influencing safety, quality and regulatory compliance,” the company said.
The deployment reflects a wider shift in the shipbuilding industry, where cybersecurity is increasingly being embedded into vessel design rather than added after delivery. The introduction of IACS UR E26 and E27 has accelerated investment in cyber risk management tools as shipyards and equipment suppliers prepare for stricter compliance requirements on newbuildings.
For Rakuten Maritime, the Hanwha Ocean agreement represents a move from technology development into commercial deployment as the company looks to expand its presence in the global maritime cybersecurity market.
