Consumers need protection from AI agents, lawmaker says

Senator Mark Warner is proposing a new draft bill called the AI Agent Act to regulate AI agents, also known as autonomous bots, which assist with tasks such as booking trips and online shopping.
The bill aims to establish rights and responsibilities for AI agents accessing large online platforms, ensuring they act in the best interests of users.
The proposed legislation includes creating a Federal Trade Commission registry of trusted AI agents to protect consumers’ personal information.
The draft bill emphasizes the need for AI agents to act responsibly, requiring them to safeguard users’ privacy, protect collected data, and not exploit businesses.
The use of AI-powered shopping assistants is projected to account for up to $385 billion of U.S. e-commerce sales by 2030.
Warner is releasing the draft for feedback from stakeholders and the public before formally introducing it to Congress.
