CIA boss compares cutting-edge AI to nuclear weapons

CIA Director John Ratcliffe likened the capabilities of advanced AI models to nuclear weapons in a defense of the Trump administration’s strict stance on controlling powerful AI technologies.
On June 12, the U.S. government imposed an export control on Anthropic’s two most powerful AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, marking the first government-forced withdrawal of advanced models.
This export control was partially lifted on Mythos on Friday, allowing a restricted circle of U.S. partners access, while Fable 5 remains offline.
To align with the government’s approach, rival AI company, OpenAI, launched its GPT-5.6 model with very limited access, agreeing to let the U.S. government vet authorized partners individually.
Ratcliffe reiterated the importance of tracking emerging technologies, placing it as a priority “right up there with China,” and highlighted the threat posed by U.S. adversaries who could misuse American advancements.
The director emphasized a reorganization of the CIA around cybersecurity, describing it as both a defensive shield and an offensive sword.
AWS announced a $1 billion credit program for U.S. intelligence agencies and introduced a classified cloud service for American defense contractors at the conference.
