Italy to join US-led Pax Silica AI initiative despite Trump row

Italy is set to join the U.S.-led Pax Silica initiative aimed at securing artificial intelligence (AI) supply chains despite recent tensions between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ambassador Armando Varricchio told Corriere della Sera that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will sign a memorandum of understanding on the initiative.
Pax Silica, an initiative by the U.S. State Department, seeks to unite allied countries in securing AI-related supply chains covering various sectors including energy, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, and AI models.
The European Commission and the Netherlands have already joined the initiative, which was further discussed at a Washington summit that Italy attended as an observer.
Italy’s planned participation in Pax Silica in Miami was postponed after a public disagreement between Meloni and Trump over the Iran war, but plans are now underway to proceed.
