The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee is holding a hearing on the potential impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on society titled “AI and the American Dream: Promoting Innovation, Affordability, and American Dominance”.
Anthropic, an AI company, announced a $200 million investment into researching AI’s disruption on the economy and jobs, joining growing industry calls to develop solutions for such disruptions.
Anthropic’s CEO expanded in an essay on government support for those economically impacted by AI.
President Trump has also discussed meeting with AI executives to discuss “giving back” to the public and potentially creating a public wealth fund from AI profits.
Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei proposed data collection, new pro-employment policies, and universal basic income (financed through taxes on relevant companies or raising the capital gains tax).
The company outlined economic policy frameworks for handling various levels of unemployment due to AI and proposed regulations similar to the FAA for rigorous safety and auditing.
Anthropic, alongside other AI companies, is pushing for more robust economic and regulatory measures regarding AI’s widespread and long-term impact on the economy and job market.
