Pope Leo to address human dignity in the age of AI

Pope Leo XIV is set to release a landmark encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas” on Monday, focusing on preserving human dignity in the face of artificial intelligence (AI).
This encyclical, the first of Leo XIV’s tenure, addresses significant concerns about AI’s environmental, social, and educational impacts.
The launch event will take place in Vatican City with the participation of leading Catholic figures and Chris Olah, co-founder of AI company Anthropic.
Pope Leo XIV has made AI a focus of his brief papacy since being elected in May 2025, emphasizing the church’s role in defending human dignity and justice against AI-related challenges.
The encyclical references traditional Catholic teaching while likely proposing new strategies to address AI’s specific impacts, opposing any notion AI could embody human-like virtues or personhood.
