UNT launches new Bachelor of Science in AI

The University of North Texas (UNT) is launching one of the state’s rare standalone Bachelor of Science degrees in Artificial Intelligence (AI), reflecting a broader trend in the rise of AI in various industries.
The new AI degree program separates AI from the traditional computer science curriculum to better offer courses around AI, allowing for interdisciplinary work and a focus on AI-related advances across fields like healthcare and transportation.
The new degree program is designed directly based on employer needs, which seek employees capable of designing and integrating AI systems, rather than using only pre-built tools.
The curriculum includes practical applications, with students undertaking a two-semester capstone experience building projects from concept to prototype, often in collaboration with real-world clients and industry partners.
UNT has incorporated flexibility into the program’s design to keep up with the fast-evolving AI field, with elective options that can adapt to new technologies and areas like agentic AI and advanced machine learning.
In addition to the major, UNT offers stackable AI credentials like an Applied AI certificate aimed at non-computing majors and nondegree-seeking individuals who require AI literacy.
