Granite Staters, residents of New Hampshire, are increasingly pessimistic about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on various aspects of their lives, with a majority believing it will have a negative effect overall on the U.S. over the next decade, a concern that has risen by three percentage points since October.
-
A majority of New Hampshire residents use AI, with 59% reporting it’s part of their work, indicating a growing integration of AI in daily life. However, this optimistic view is offset by concern about job losses and a belief that AI will have detrimental effects on multiple areas including elections, the economy, and personal relationships.
-
Despite some positive expectations, notably regarding medical care and workplace productivity, optimism is notably absent in other sectors like the environment, arts, and entertainment.
-
Residents’ personal experiences with AI have become less positive. Less than half of users report having a positive experience with AI when used at work or for personal purposes, highlighting a shift in sentiment compared to earlier in the year.
-
There is also significant opposition to the establishment of data centers to house AI-driven computers, with two-thirds of respondents against their development in their hometowns and a broad bipartisan consensus to at least pause their expansion, despite a slight majority willingness to support a pause.
