The OECD NEA and KAERI co-hosted the International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear Energy in Jeju, Korea from May 4–5, 2026.
-
The meeting focused on how AI can transform nuclear energy, with a theme of building an AI strategy to accelerate deployment and reduce costs.
-
The workshop brought together over 170 stakeholders including policymakers, technology experts, and industry representatives to understand AI’s role across the nuclear sector’s life cycle.
-
Key challenges discussed included scaling AI deployment through effective data governance, explainability, regulatory evidence, and integrating AI into engineering and maintenance processes.
-
Practical applications of AI in plant performance, knowledge management, new builds, and dismantling were highlighted. The need for transparent, accountable, and robust AI systems was emphasized.
-
Participants stressed the importance of maintaining human oversight in safety-critical environments, shifting the focus from isolated AI tools to developing integrated industrial ecosystems.
-
The workshop also showcased the winning team of the NEA Coding Competition and included a hands-on AI session with interactive learning on AI tools, predicting failures, and anomaly detection.
