Pope Leo XIV to publish encyclical on artificial intelligence May 25

Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” will be published on May 25 and focuses on artificial intelligence and protection of human dignity.
The encyclical was signed on May 15, linked to the 135th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s foundational social encyclical, “Rerum Novarum.”
For the first time, Pope Leo XIV will personally attend the Vatican press conference marking the publication, along with an AI tech founder from Anthropic, Christopher Olah.
Key religious and ethical figures, including theologian Anna Rowlands and Jesuit professor Léocadie Lushombo, will join the panel for the encyclical’s release alongside prominent cardinals.
Pope Leo XIV has consistently highlighted the themes of artificial intelligence and human dignity, emphasizing AI’s role in serving rather than replacing human beings.
The Pope has warned against AI’s potential risks, including its impact on children’s development and its encroachment on human relationships and creativity.
