How the FAA wants to use artificial intelligence

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an artificial intelligence project aimed at easing the workload for air traffic controllers.
Spearheaded by FAA chief Bryan Bedford, the project aims to revamp the nation’s airspace management.
Known as the Strategic Management of Airspace Routing Trajectories (SMART), the initiative does not seek to replace human controllers but rather assist them.
The goal of the SMART initiative is to reduce flight delays and ease the controllers’ jobs by utilizing information like airline scheduling data to proactively reduce congestion.
Companies involved in the project include aerospace technology firm Thales, software company Air Space Intelligence, and Palantir (which declined to comment).
