Meta to lay off 10% of workforce in AI push

Meta plans to lay off 10% of its global workforce, approximately 8,000 employees, focusing its resources on artificial intelligence (AI).
The first wave of layoffs is slated to begin on May 20, with additional rounds planned later in the year.
Meta will also vacate 6,000 open positions, indicating a shift in hiring practices.
This strategic pivot follows a series of earlier layoffs in its Reality Labs division and a reshuffle of roles towards more AI-driven solutions.
Tech industry peers, including Microsoft and Amazon, are also adopting similar strategies of downsizing and pivoting towards AI initiatives.
Meta has significant investments in AI, having recently introduced its major AI model, “Muse Spark,” and plans to utilize new employee tracking data to train AI agents.
According to Meta’s third-quarter report, the company sees continued growth in enhancing core services while pioneering new AI-powered experiences.
