Duffy: AI replacing air traffic controllers ‘not going to happen’

The Department of Transportation is undertaking a $12.5 billion modernization effort, aiming to replace outdated infrastructure with fiber optics, upgraded radar and radios, and new control centers.
The second phase of the project, costing up to $10 billion, involves implementing AI systems to help controllers manage the airspace more efficiently and prioritize emergencies, reducing human error.
Sean Duffy hopes that the new AI technology can ease the stress of air traffic controllers’ jobs by providing more tools to manage their tasks and deconflict aviation flows in advance.
The proposed modernization, including the second phase focusing on AI, requires Congressional approval.
