State Superintendent’s Involvement
Illinois State Board of Education State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders emphasized the importance of AI being used to benefit students and teachers, rather than as a replacement for educators.
District-Specific Decisions
Decisions on AI use will be individually made by each of Illinois’ 851 school districts.

Superintendent Sanders stressed that AI should be viewed as a tool, not as a replacement for human educators.

The guidance document, spanning about 400 pages, offers detailed information about AI and examples of its application in teaching.
Legislative and Institutional Actions
Recent legislative actions include Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s signing of the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, and the University of Chicago’s decision to restrict AI use in law classrooms.
Ongoing Education and Updates
State superintendents are participating in a webinar on AI, and school districts will be asked to recommend individuals for committees that will update the state’s AI guidance throughout the school year.
