Pope Leo XIV urges international dialogue during “epochal turning point” in AI

Pope Leo XIV used his message for the AI for Good Global Summit to assure the Holy See’s “presence and openness to dialogue,” especially about the significance of the current era regarding artificial intelligence.
The Pope’s choice of the name Leo correlates with the broad impact of artificial intelligence, echoing the Industrial Revolution’s influence during Pope Leo XIII’s tenure.
Most recently, the Pope’s views on AI were elaborated in his first encyclical, Magnafica Humanitas, which emphasized safeguarding human dignity in the age of AI and promoting a dignified life for all.
The AI for Good Global Summit, organized by the United Nations and co-hosted by the government of Switzerland, included various high-profile speakers like presidents from Estonia, Iceland, and Rwanda, as well as industry leaders and luminaries such as Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA.
The encyclical Magnafica Humanitas garnered praise for its thoughtful approach to AI, highlighting necessary regulation and a focus on human welfare, which attracted attention from global leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, US Vice President JD Vance, and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.
