UK government sets out five AI scenarios to stress-test policy

The UK’s Government Office for Science (GO-Science) has outlined five possible AI scenarios for the next four years in its ‘AI Scenarios 2030’ report, aimed at aiding policymakers navigate the future of AI.
The scenarios range from AI progressing slowly, causing limited disruption, to rapid AI advancement leading to substantial economic growth but also posing severe risks and labor displacement.
The report emphasizes that AI capabilities will continue to grow, yielding positive impacts but also the potential for serious harm without government intervention.
By 2030, the frontier AI market will remain dominated by a few large tech companies, and global competition is expected to intensify as economies grow more dependent on technology, with the US and China leading.
The five scenarios are designed to explore different futures, helping policymakers understand and plan for various outcomes. They also advocate a ‘backcasting’ methodology to determine the policies and enablers necessary for achieving desired outcomes in AI development.
