New coalition puts children’s rights at the centre of the AI age

The Coalition for Children’s Rights and Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence includes a wide range of organizations such as governments, UN agencies, tech firms, and child welfare experts, and it is grounded in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The coalition was launched at the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, featuring founding members such as the Department of Global Communications, UNICEF, and UNESCO, with seventeen countries participating initially.
Central to the coalition’s mission is a shift in perspective: viewing children not just as users of AI technology who need protection, but as rights holders whose voices should inherently shape AI development.
The coalition aims to integrate children’s perspectives legally into the design, deployment, and oversight of AI systems to better address the specific risks AI poses to them.
The launch was in response to the UN Secretary-General’s call for an AI Child Safety Pledge, emphasizing the importance of ensuring children’s views genuinely influence decisions about AI systems.
