New artificial intelligence model reveals invisible multiple sclerosis lesions

Multiple sclerosis (MS) primarily affected areas in the gray matter have been difficult to detect due to the limitations of conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
A recent study led by the University at Buffalo found a way to use artificial intelligence (AI) to reveal previously unobservable cortical lesions in existing MRI scans, which plays a key role in MS progression and cognitive impairment.
The AI method applied multiple image-processing techniques, including a new technique called MMCLE (multimodal cortical lesion enhancement), to detect and quantify cortical lesions that were previously invisible.
This innovation enables clinicians to better monitor MS progression and its impact on cognitive functions and disability, paving the way for future clinical trials and better patient care.
The extensive collaboration among scientists and clinicians from diverse organizations, such as the MS Center Amsterdam and Genentech, contributed to the successful implementation of this groundbreaking AI-based approach.
