Previous distinct developments for these types of hate have become interconnected, especially online after major events like the Hamas attacks and the Bondi terrorist attack.
Analysis revealed that offline incidents of hate against Jewish and Muslim Australians spurred substantial spikes in hateful online discussion, creating a feedback loop between online and offline hate.
The research, using various methods, suggests that the rise in hate is a lasting shift rather than occasional spikes, necessitating a change in how government and society respond.
To better prevent future incidents, a permanent “Observatory of Hate” is suggested to monitor and understand hate targeting all communities over time, moving beyond reactive crisis response to proactive prevention.
