Stormont Dundas Glengarry adopts responsible AI use framework

Ontario municipalities are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in their operations and are facing associated risks and regulatory requirements.
The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG) council has endorsed using the Eastern Ontario IT Collaborative’s (EOITC) Responsible AI Use Framework to guide the adoption of AI.
The framework emphasizes privacy, security, and the avoidance of biased outputs in the use of AI.
No immediate costs are expected from adopting this framework; however, there is a broad expectation for accountability, oversight, and risk management concerning AI usage.
SDG hopes to extend the use of this framework to collaborating local municipalities and believes AI can enhance efficiency and reduce costs rather than eliminate jobs.
The use of AI must remain transparent with human oversight, and cybersecurity is highlighted as a key concern and potential area for AI to aid in defenses.
