DigitalLead and BifrostConnect have launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening cybersecurity onboard ships by giving owners and captains greater control over remote access to vessel systems.
The SeaSecure project seeks to address growing concerns over cyber vulnerabilities created by the increasing digitalisation of ships. Modern vessels rely on a wide range of connected equipment that often requires remote maintenance, software updates and troubleshooting while at sea, reducing the need for costly port visits but creating potential security risks.
The partners are developing a hardware-based remote access solution that allows suppliers and service technicians to connect to ship systems only when required and only for the duration of a specific task.
“The challenge is that increased digitalisation also increases the risk of cyberattacks. Therefore, there is a need for a solution that balances efficient operations with high security,” the project partners said.
Unlike many existing remote access solutions that rely on permanent connections or VPN tunnels, SeaSecure uses an ad hoc approach. Access is granted through a physical device connected directly to the equipment requiring service, with the connection removed once work is completed.
BifrostConnect said the approach significantly reduces the potential attack surface while still allowing ships to receive technical support without needing to enter port.
The solution is also being developed as a “clientless” system, enabling external suppliers to access equipment without installing software on their own devices.
DigitalLead and BifrostConnect are now seeking shipping companies and maritime IT and operational technology providers to participate in testing and validation of the system.
The project is scheduled to run until April 2027 and has received partial funding from the Danish Maritime Fund.
