China premier urges AI governance to avoid ‘losing control’

Premier Li Qiang of China warned that the world risks losing control of frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) if governments do not act fast to regulate them.
The fear of AI-driven disruption to labor markets, security breaches, and potential creation of bioweapons were raised as significant concerns.
In a speech at “Summer Davos,” Li Qiang emphasized that the speed of technological progress is unprecedented, but it comes with prominent risks and ethical lapses.

Li Qiang reassured attendees that China’s economy is seen as a “safe haven” amid the global economic tepid environment and multiple international shocks.
Beijing’s relationship with Washington remains turbulent, with potential for geopolitical conflict, although recent engagements between the Chinese and U.S. presidents provide some optimism.
The economic challenges China is facing stem from sluggish domestic consumption and property sector debt, alongside global uncertainties.
