The artificial intelligence (AI) boom has sparked a new industrial race, with companies investing heavily in computing infrastructure. However, the expansion of AI factories is encountering physical limitations, particularly related to cooling, electricity, land, memory, and water resources.

Traditional data centers relying on evaporative cooling systems face major resource problems as AI computing scales. Data centers consume large amounts of water due to cooling requirements, and this becomes a limiting factor in regions already dealing with water supply constraints.

To tackle these challenges, Nvidia has introduced an innovative DSX AI factory architecture utilizing a closed-loop liquid cooling system. This design moves coolant directly to chips, absorbs heat, and recirculates without evaporation, reducing dependency on traditional cooling systems.

Unlike traditional systems, Nvidia’s liquid cooling design allows using outside air to remove heat, lowering power consumption, and reducing water usage. The design targets coolant entering at about 45°C, allowing for operational efficiencies.

By minimizing cooling overhead, AI factories using this design can dedicate more energy to running models and training systems, translating into higher revenue and the potential to reuse captured heat for nearby buildings or industrial processes.
