- The Shanghai Meteorological Service has developed the MAZU AI Agent for Urban Multi-Hazard Early Warning, which is now being deployed in dozens of developing nations to address rising urban climate risks.
- The MAZU system operates as part of China’s contribution to the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative, which aims to protect everyone from hazardous climate events by the end of 2027.
- The MAZU system employs advanced satellites, radar, and localized AI models to offer hyper-local disaster data analysis, customized risk assessments, real-time automated weather alerts, and emergency shelter navigation mappings.
- The rollout is managed by the Zhang Qian Mission, an international cooperation unit working with roughly 50 young scientists and engineers to provide installation and technical training for the system worldwide.
- The system, named after the ancient Chinese goddess who protects travelers, has seen expanding international use to help cope with various severe weather and climate risks in regions such as Mongolia and Nigeria.
