- Two 14-year-old Edmonton junior high school students have been charged for allegedly using artificial intelligence to create child sexual exploitation images of their classmates without consent.
- The incident came to the attention of authorities from ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit after a teacher notified police in March, following complaints from students.
- The Edmonton junior high school involved has not been identified by authorities.
- Apart from making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials, the two boys are also charged with voyeurism.
- This is the second incident involving AI and child sexual exploitation materials that ICE has investigated in a school setting, with a similar case occurring in December at a Calgary high school where a student was charged for similar actions.
- The Edmonton Police Service and Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre collaborated on the investigation.
