Ukraine’s defence AI chief warns of ‘war of operating systems’

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into diverse battlefield functions for Ukraine, from drone operations to missile strike data analysis, as revealed by Danylo Tsvok, head of Ukraine’s defence ministry AI research centre according to Reuters.
Tsvok predicts a “war of operating systems” between Ukraine and Russia in the next three to five years if the war persists, with AI systems likely to consolidate into a single network overseeing the battlefield.
Ukraine aims to create a unified AI operating system that coordinates weapons and data systems from frontline units to strategic command, although it stresses the importance of maintaining human oversight in combat decisions.
Drones have significantly transformed the war, and AI promises to enhance the “kill chain” further, alongside experiments with ground robots to address troop shortages.
International AI companies, including U.S. firm Palantir, are keenly observing and providing technology to Ukraine, while Russia is also advancing its own AI capabilities, using AI to expedite drone and missile attack planning.
The ongoing conflict serves as a testing ground for AI in warfare, offering valuable data for model training and strategic decision-making.
