Visa and OpenAI partnered to build a secure infrastructure for payments initiated by artificial intelligence (AI) agents.
The collaboration utilizes Visa’s global network, credentialing, and security infrastructure to support what is termed “agentic commerce.”
The partnership aims to enable developer-focused enterprise applications including automated and conversational workflows.
AI transactions will operate under clearly defined user permissions, policies, controls, including spending limits and merchant category restrictions, and will involve tokenized Visa credentials and real-time fraud monitoring.
Visa stated the goal is to ensure that transactions are trusted, secure, and seamless as AI agents begin to play a larger role in economic activities.
The project builds on Visa’s earlier launch of the Visa Intelligent Commerce program, which offers modules for authentication, tokenization, payment instructions, personalization, and risk-control signals.
