The Florida Department of Education has mandated that school districts update their existing “Internet Safety” policies to include the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
An upcoming rule development workshop on June 22 will guide districts in amending their policies to incorporate AI guidelines.
Despite Gov. Ron DeSantis making AI regulation a priority, the Legislature did not pass a bill that would have imposed restrictions and requirements on AI companies.
This bill would have included provisions for parents to control children’s interactions with AI chatbots, banned Florida government agencies from contracting with AI companies tied to “foreign countries of concern,” and included rules about the unauthorized use of individuals’ names, images, or likenesses.
The new mandate specifically focuses on the use of AI in educational settings, addressing a gap that was not covered by the unpassed Legislature measure.
