The School of Veterinary Medicine at Penn Vet has launched the Data, Analytics, and Technology for AI in Livestock Animal Behavior (DAT-AI-LAB) on May 20 at its New Bolton Center.
-
The lab is spearheading efforts led by Daniel Foy, co-founder and CEO of AgriGates, and Thomas Parsons, a Swine Production Medicine professor.
-
The lab aims to utilize large-scale data collection and AI to improve animal health and welfare decisions.
-
Initially focusing on swine and dairy animals, the lab plans to expand and develop tools that assist both farm hands and veterinary practitioners.
-
The DAT-AI-LAB employs a decentralized AI approach, processing much of the computation on local equipment on farms.
-
The lab has been supported by a $31,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and a $90,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Center for Poultry and Livestock Excellence.
-
The DAT-AI-LAB aims to establish Penn and Philadelphia as global leaders in livestock behavioral intelligence.
-
This initiative forms part of Penn Vet’s broader efforts at New Bolton Center, which also recently announced a $94 million laboratory and a $17 million educational center.
