New York City published its first framework for AI usage in public schools in March, categorizing tasks for AI use with a traffic light system.

Liat Olenick, co-founder of Climate Families NYC, criticized the guidelines for lacking detail and addressing major concerns not at all, demanding more rigorous rulemaking from neuroscience, climate science, and education experts.
New York City’s Department of Education promised a more comprehensive guidebook to be released later in the year, and following feedback from the public, they will revise the current regulations.
The New York State United Teachers union recommended developmentally appropriate limits on screen time and AI, urging for a ban on direct contact with AI for young students and no unsupervised AI use before high school graduation.
Many parents and teachers are concerned that local authorities are unduly influenced by the AI industry, which is eager to have its technology used in government settings.
