Initial Counter-Drone Technologies Deliver a Sting

The Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) 401 began testing prototypes of the second iteration of the U.S. military’s Bumblebee counter-drone system, dubbed Bumblebee Version 2 (V2), on April 23 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The V2 features advanced artificial intelligence for automated target recognition, part of its anti-drone capability.
Perennial Autonomy is manufacturing the Bumblebee counter-drone capabilities, having been awarded a $5.2 million contract by JIATF.
The operational testing includes both the original version (V1) and V2, alongside quad-rotor drones, and is part of expediting the deployment of affordable counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The U.S. military identifies a significant threat from hostile drones, as seen in conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, prompting priority on counter-UAS initiatives for smaller drones.
The JIATF, under Brig. Gen. Matthew Ross, leverages various military units for testing, with the 10th Mountain Division and 18th Airborne Corps actively involved.
Bumblebee V2 is designed to integrate with existing layered defensive systems, with significant satisfaction among leaders regarding its capabilities and ease of use.
The Bumblebee system package includes an advanced camera system with improved gimbal rotation, enhanced software, and a comprehensive ground station setup.
