The study, conducted by a collaboration of pathologists, colorectal cancer experts, and researchers from the Central Finland Biobank and Wellbeing Services County of Central Finland, focused on colorectal cancer with a dataset of approximately 1,300 patients from Central Finland.
A model was trained and validated using data from Oulu University Hospital and the United States to improve colorectal cancer detection and diagnosis.
Tiina Jokela highlighted the advantages of Finland’s high-quality biobanks, registers, and unified healthcare system that support advanced research and swift implementation of results.
The collaborative environment in Central Finland was noted as an ideal pilot for flexible integration of research and clinical work.
The project, AI-Hub II, is co-funded by the European Union and conducted in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä, the Central Finland Biobank, and the Wellbeing Services County of Central Finland.
The study used data from the Central Finland project “Colorectal Cancer 2000–2015” and further refined models from previous projects AI Hub I and II.
The funding sources for the study include the European Union and the Regional Council of Central Finland.
According to researchers, new methods, including this model, need validation through larger datasets to ensure their efficacy and reliability.
