UCSB Economic Summit Offers a Largely Positive Look at Artificial Intelligence

At UC Santa Barbara’s annual Economic Summit, experts discussed the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) and housing issues.
Peter Rupert, UCSB professor and director of the Economic Forecast Project, used AI coding agents for this year’s analysis and assured that AI will not lead to mass job displacements, pointing to historical precedents where each technological revolution resulted in new job creation.
Rudy Kass, a global AI advisor, argued that automation benefits everyone economically in the long term and emphasized that housing, healthcare, and education crises result from policy failures rather than technological shortcomings.
Igor Mezić mentioned the need for a “benevolent” context-aware AI and highlighted the importance of determining how AI is utilized responsibly.
The experts compared housing developments in Austin, Texas, which has seen significant housing stock growth and decreased rental prices, with housing challenges in Los Angeles and San Francisco, stressing that increasing housing supply is key to easing housing crises.
