Pope Leo presents ‘Magnifica humanitas’ calling for disarmament of AI

Pope Leo XIV’s social encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” addresses the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to serve humanity while warning against its misuse in fostering domination, exclusion, and war.
The Pope likened the technological revolution to the Industrial Revolution, emphasizing the necessity of technological progress aligning with human dignity, solidarity, and the common good.
Drawing parallels to Rerum Novarum, he called for AI to be “disarmed” from logics of domination and exclusion, advocating for conscientious moral responsibility accompanying technological advancements.
Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of every individual’s participation in rebuilding the ethical framework for the digital age, using the biblical story of Nehemiah as an example of cooperative and compassionate reconstruction.
He stressed that technology’s progress must center on the human person and ensure it does not reduce individuals to mere products, but upholds their dignity, freedom, and intrinsic worth in love and worship.
