Vance ‘looking forward to reading’ Pope Leo’s AI encyclical

Vice President JD Vance expressed anticipation for Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” about artificial intelligence, stating it will likely carry significant influence due to the Pope’s platform.
The encyclical, titled “Magnificent Humanity” in English, focuses on AI and human dignity and is scheduled for publication on May 25.
Vance believes the encyclical will be an important document, possibly containing insights with which he may not always agree but acknowledges its overall importance.
In discussing the government’s role in AI, Vance highlighted President Donald Trump’s stance on maintaining pro-innovation policies to win the global AI race while ensuring data protection and privacy.
Vance admitted that artificial intelligence has its downsides and emphasized the need for balancing safety with innovation, a challenge the Trump administration aims to address.
Pope Leo XIV has shown continuing interest in AI and the dignity of work since his pontificate, aligning with the Church’s long-standing concern in social teaching.
