Former Hypergiant co-founder Ben Lamm and synthetic biology expert George Church collaborate on Colossal, aiming to revive extinct species like the woolly mammoth, moa bird, and dire wolf due to the projected mass extinction by 2050.
Despite facing skepticism, Colossal claims success in breeding dire wolves using gene editing and surrogate hounds.
The company has made significant strides in artificial-gestation technology, inventing a new type of synthetic egg that allows oxygen to flow while preventing moisture loss and enables embryo observation.
Recently, Colossal’s synthetic eggs successfully incubated and hatched 26 chicks, with plans to use this technology for larger animals such as dodos, marsupials, and eventually elephants.
While the team at Colossal has impressive achievements in artificial wombs, experts highlight that it may be decades until human artificial wombs are viable, as critical knowledge about tissue engineering and the complete reproductive process is still under development.
