Helsing and OHB join forces on space-based reconnaissance venture

Artificial intelligence defence firm Helsing and German space company OHB have formed a joint venture to develop a space-based tactical surveillance and targeting system.
The initiative underlines Europe’s efforts to strengthen its military capabilities in orbit, spurred by the need for real-time targeting following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The joint venture also includes an existing consortium comprising Kongsberg Defence Aerospace and Hensoldt.
The KIRK system aims to provide near-real-time data for military operations by combining satellite-based reconnaissance with AI-driven targeting.
Helsing will provide artificial intelligence and automated target recognition, while OHB will develop and manage the space-based space systems.
Hensoldt will contribute surveillance sensors and ground stations, and Kongsberg will supply small satellites, communication, and ground network capabilities.
Specific financial terms and timelines for the project have not been disclosed.
