- Pope Leo XIV has approved the establishment of a new Vatican commission on artificial intelligence (AI) to manage the Holy See’s response to AI’s rapid growth and its impact on human dignity, integral development, and internal Church use.
- The announcement was made by the Holy See Press Office on May 16. This comes after a meeting on May 3 between Pope Leo XIV and Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
- The upcoming encyclical from Pope Leo XIV is anticipated to delve deeply into artificial intelligence, framing it as a major moral question of our time akin to the Industrial Revolution critiqued in Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum.
- The Vatican commission will comprise representatives from several key institutions, including the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and the Pontifical Academy for Life, among others.
- The new commission is designed to coordinate efforts, facilitate dialogue, and promote collaboration regarding AI’s implications, as well as oversee AI’s policies within the Holy See.
- Pope Leo XIV has consistently emphasized the global challenges posed by AI, highlighting its relation to defending human dignity, justice, and labor, as he mentioned during an address to the College of Cardinals in May 2025.
- The coordinating institution for the Vatican AI commission will initially be the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, with coordination responsibilities potentially changing on a yearly basis under the Holy Father’s approval.
