Pope Leo establishes new Vatican commission on artificial intelligence

Pope Leo has approved the establishment of an inter-dicasterial commission at the Vatican focused on artificial intelligence, outlining its impact on humanity and the Church.
The decision was announced on May 16 and made part of a papal decree known as a rescriptum.
The commission aims to assess the developments and potential effects of artificial intelligence on human development and human dignity.
The commission comprises representatives from four Vatican dicasteries and three pontifical academies and is coordinated by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development for the initial year.
The coordinating role is set to rotate annually among different participating institutions.
This move signifies the Vatican’s official coordinated effort to study artificial intelligence and its implications, under the leadership of Pope Leo.
For over a decade, the Vatican has sporadically addressed aspects of AI, and this decree marks the first official coordination of those efforts.
