Illinois Senate Democrats introduce bills to regulate artificial intelligence – Shaw Local

Illinois Senate Democrats introduced an eight-bill package to regulate various aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) due to federal inaction on the issue.
The legislation aims to create a “de facto national standard” by modeling the bills on regulations passed in California and New York.
Some industry advocates are concerned that multiple state regulations will create complicated business environments and urged lawmakers to wait for federal developments.
Despite threats from the federal government, including potential funding withdrawals, Illinois lawmakers are determined to proceed with their AI regulations.
The bills cover areas such as consumer protection, developer transparency, and educational usage. One bill aims to require large AI developers to publish transparency reports detailing potential catastrophic risks.
Other bills focus on ensuring that AI chatbots appropriately handle mental health crises, preventing AI bots from reselling event tickets, and protecting consumer data from being used for personalized advertising.
The bills also aim to regulate AI use within schools, including banning the use of facial recognition technology in schools and prohibiting teachers from using AI for grading.
The majority of the bills passed through committee unanimously, indicating significant bipartisan support.
Lawmakers are committed to updating the regulations as needed to continue protecting their constituents while addressing the rapid advancements in AI technology.
