Denver students push to implement more sustainable AI practices

Denver Public Schools (DPS) have been integrating sustainability into the curriculum for some time.
Currently, students are focusing on the environmental impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and specifically data centers.
Elizabeth Martinez and Jesus Vasquez are leading efforts to educate their peers about the environmental costs of data centers, which use large amounts of energy and water.
Students are aware of the large water and electricity usage of data centers and are involved in a petition against the construction of a new data center in Elyria-Swansea neighborhood.
DPS’s director of sustainability, Tom Wildman, emphasizes the importance of students understanding AI responsibly to become informed future leaders.
