Lee installed as inaugural Stickle professor – The Source

Aaron Y. Lee, MD has been installed as the inaugural Arthur W. Stickle Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU Medicine).
He is recognized for his significant contributions to applying artificial intelligence (AI) to ophthalmology research and patient care, and is head of WashU Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences.
The professorship, established in honor of pediatric ophthalmologist Arthur W. Stickle and his wife Emily, aims to advance vision research and patient care through innovation.
Lee previously served at the University of Washington in Seattle and has pioneered the application of deep learning in ophthalmic imaging, enhancing AI models for retinal disease detection.
His recent research includes using data-driven methods to identify genetic factors influencing retinal diseases and developing novel severity scores for certain retinal conditions.
Lee plays a crucial role in standardizing ocular imaging (DICOM standards) and in nonprofit collaborations focused on macular degeneration research.
He has contributed to creating regulatory frameworks for machine learning tools in healthcare and is leading significant AI research projects, including with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Arthur and Emily Stickle’s legacy supports ophthalmology through educational lectures and various volunteering contributions.
