MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College said Canvas services were back online Friday morning after a nationwide cybersecurity incident involving Instructure’s Canvas learning management system.The college said it was aware of the recent incident involving Canvas, a platform widely used by colleges and universities across the country. As of 11 a.m. Friday, all services had been restored.According to Big Bend, publicly available information indicated a criminal extortion group claimed responsibility for a breach that may have exposed some user data, including names, email addresses, student ID numbers and messages exchanged within the platform. The company indicated there was no current evidence that sensitive information such as passwords, financial data or government identification numbers had been compromised.Big Bend said it was actively monitoring communications from Instructure and relevant cybersecurity authorities to better understand the scope and impact of the incident.“Protecting the privacy and security of our students, faculty, and staff is a top priority,” said Matt Killebrew, director of communications at Big Bend Community College. “We are working closely with our partners and the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges to stay informed and will take any necessary actions to safeguard our campus community.”While the investigation continues, the college encouraged students, employees and Canvas users to take precautionary steps, including being cautious of unsolicited emails or messages asking for personal information or login credentials, avoiding unfamiliar links or attachments, monitoring accounts for unusual activity and updating passwords regularly as a best practice.Big Bend said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
