ShinyHunters — a hacker group known for large-scale data breaches, claimed responsibility for the incident, said the Daily Pennsylvanian.The group wrote in a message to affected Canvas pages that any university that does not want its data released should contact the group before the end of day on May 12. The message also stated that ShinyHunters had breached Instructure’s systems previously.At 5:13 p.m., Penn State sent an Outlook email saying Canvas is “experiencing a disruption to Canvas related to an ongoing security incident affecting Instructure, the vendor that provides the Canvas platform.” The email also said users should avoid clicking on links, messages or content that may be posted by threat actors.
