YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University junior Matt Baker has been awarded a competitive fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University, one of the nation’s top cybersecurity institutions.The Carnegie Mellon fellowship runs from June 11 to Aug. 1. Baker will take advanced courses in network defense, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity policy, and will work on real-world client projects. As he looks ahead to a summer of learning in Pittsburgh, his story serves as an inspiration for first-generation college students and aspiring cybersecurity professionals.Baker is the first in his immediate family to attend college. He discovered his passion for technology in a high school career-tech computer class, a path he found after an unexpected schedule change shifted him from medicine to computers. He ultimately chose EMU for its hands-on cybersecurity program.Baker credits EMU’s faculty and curriculum for preparing him. “The technical skills and support I’ve gained here gave me the confidence to apply for such a prestigious program. I’m excited to bring back new perspectives and knowledge to EMU,” he said.At EMU, Baker balances a full course load with a job as a junior systems engineer at Nemsys, an IT company in Toledo. The university’s flexible class schedule allows him to gain real-world experience while pursuing his degree.Outside the classroom, Baker volunteers with Junior Achievement, the group that supported his early career development.
