Pentagon strikes deals with 7 Big Tech companies after shunning Anthropic

The Department of Defense has reached an agreement with seven major technology companies to incorporate their artificial intelligence tools into classified defense networks.
Companies included in the deal are SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection. Note that Anthropic is notably excluded from this agreement.
The Trump administration had previously blacklisted Anthropic over disagreements regarding the use of AI in warfare, but renewed discussions have emerged after recent technology advancements from Anthropic.
The AI tools from these companies will be employed for “lawful operational use,” aiming to enhance the military’s proficiency in domain warfare and decision-making.
The Pentagon highlights the success of its GenAI.mil platform which has been utilized by 1.3 million DoD personnel.
Historically, Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, was the only one in the Pentagon’s classified network; however, the Trump administration severed ties with the company over terms concerning the use of AI for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.
Anthropic faced a “supply chain risk” designation akin to those given to companies associated with foreign adversaries, and subsequently sued the government, finding legal support against the blacklisting.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s recent meeting with White House officials signals a potential shift in the dialogue between the company and the government.
