St. Bernard Preparatory School in Cullman will expand its academic offerings for the 2026-27 school year to include AP Cybersecurity, a new College Board course designed to prepare students for the demands of an increasingly digital world. Leading the program will be Mark DeVito, a cybersecurity professional, educator and former FBI agent.
Headmaster Phuong Nguyen shared the announcement with the St. Bernard community, describing the addition as a significant step forward in strengthening the school’s STEM curriculum and enhancing college-level opportunities for students.
DeVito brings more than two decades of experience with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he served as a Supervisory Special Agent and instructor. During his tenure, he trained new agents in cyber investigations and counterintelligence, earning recognition for his ability to translate complex technical concepts into engaging and practical instruction. Following his retirement from the FBI, he served as a Senior Technical Engineer with Counter Hack Challenges, working as an ethical hacker.
In addition to his professional experience, DeVito has taught at the university level, including at Virginia Tech, where he worked with graduate students in cybersecurity. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Millersville University in Pennsylvania, a nursing degree from St. Petersburg College, and a master’s degree in Information Technology from Virginia Tech.
Raised in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as the youngest of two brothers, DeVito is married with two grown children and enjoys restoring vintage computer systems as well as pursuing amateur astronomy.
His connection to St. Bernard Preparatory School developed over time through visits to the Abbey, including the Ave Maria Grotto. A conversation with current faculty member Matthew Green during the Thanksgiving season ultimately led to his decision to join the school. Having recently retired, DeVito expressed interest in contributing to a growing STEM program and sharing his expertise with students.
“I get great satisfaction from watching light bulbs go off and watching students succeed,” said Devito.
DeVito will serve in a part-time capacity, leading the AP Cybersecurity course and helping shape the school’s expanding technology curriculum.
