Alabama names state’s first chief AI officer

Alabama has appointed Aaron Wright as its first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO).
Wright, previously the director of application development, now oversees AI initiatives for the state.
The appointment follows an executive order from two years ago by Gov. Kay Ivey to create a generative AI task force.
The task force aimed to explore AI use across state agencies and make recommendations on policies and future AI applications.
A report from last year from the task force found that nearly a quarter of Alabama agencies were utilizing generative AI for various applications.
Wright has over four years of experience in his current role and nearly 30 years of IT experience overall.
His background includes leadership in the task force’s working group on data management and ownership.
Wright has held various roles in the Alabama Office of Information Technology, the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, and in the healthcare industry.
